The UK’s immigration landscape is moving faster than ever. As of 8 April 2026, the Home Office has moved beyond simple annual salary checks to a much stricter, pay-period-based compliance framework.

If you're an Indian professional currently in the UK or planning your move for September 2026, the old rules don't apply anymore. Here is your essential briefing on the April 2026 Skilled Worker salary thresholds and how to protect your visa status.

The new pay-period compliance rule

The biggest change in 2026 isn't just how much you're paid, but when you're paid. The Home Office no longer just looks at your total annual salary. They now audit individual pay periods, whether you're paid monthly or weekly.

This creates a new risk. If your salary dips below the required "going rate" for a single month because of unpaid leave or fluctuating hours, your employer could be in breach of their Sponsor Licence. This directly puts your visa at risk. For those paid monthly, your salary over any three-month period must now equal at least a quarter of your required annual threshold.

2026 salary thresholds at a glance

The standard salary threshold for new Skilled Worker applicants is now £41,700, or the going rate for your specific job code, whichever is higher.

Applicant Category 2026 General Going Rate Threshold Percentage

Standard Skilled £41,700 100% Worker

PhD (STEM Subject) £33,400 80%

New Entrant £33,400 70% (Graduate)

Health & Care Roles £29,000* 100% (of lower rate)

The New Entrant advantage for Indian students

For the class of 2026 arriving this September, there is a silver lining. If you're switching from a Student Visa to a Skilled Worker Visa, you still qualify as a New Entrant. This means you can be sponsored at a lower threshold of £33,400.

Keep in mind that you can only remain a New Entrant for a total of four years. This includes any time you've already spent on a Graduate Route visa. You'll need to plan strategically to ensure you can hit the standard threshold by your fifth year.

A checklist for Indian professionals in the UK

  • Audit your SMS: Make sure your employer has updated your salary on the Sponsor Management System (SMS) to reflect the April 2026 changes.

  • Check your SOC code: Going rates have increased for most SOC 2020 codes, so you should verify yours on the official Appendix Skilled Occupations.

  • Review your deductions: Check that salary sacrifice schemes, like pensions or gym memberships, don't push your take-home pay below the legal threshold.

The Indian Attorneys (UK) perspective

The UK government is prioritising quality over quantity in 2026. Whether you're a tech lead in London or a healthcare professional in Birmingham, compliance is your only path to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).

Don't wait for a Home Office audit to find out there's a problem. We specialise in helping the NRI community navigate the UK-India legal corridor and can help you stay on the right side of these new rules.
