If you are an Indian student graduating in the UK in 2026, the new salary thresholds might look intimidating. With the standard Skilled Worker minimum now at £41,700, many graduates worry they'll be priced out of the job market.

But there is a specific legal provision that can lower this barrier. By using the "New Entrant" rule, you can be sponsored at a significantly lower salary, making you a much more attractive hire for UK firms. At Indian Attorneys (UK), we help graduates use this rule to bridge the gap between their studies and a permanent career.

What exactly is a New Entrant?

In the 2026 immigration system, a New Entrant is a Tier 2 (Skilled Worker) applicant who is considered to be at the start of their career. You qualify for this status if you are switching from a Student Visa to a Skilled Worker Visa, or if you are under the age of 26 at the time of your application.

The advantage is purely financial. Instead of the standard £41,700, your salary threshold drops to £33,400, or 70% of the going rate for your job code, whichever is higher. For an entry-level analyst or engineer, this £8,300 difference is often the deciding factor in whether a company can afford to sponsor you.

The four-year limit

There is a catch you need to be aware of. You can only hold New Entrant status for a total of four years. This four-year clock includes any time you spend on the Graduate Route (post-study work) visa.

If you spend two years on a Graduate Visa and then switch to a Skilled Worker Visa, you only have two years left of the lower salary threshold. Once those four years are up, your employer must raise your salary to the standard rate; currently £41,700, to keep your visa valid. You need to ensure your career progression matches this salary jump by year five.

How to use this in your job hunt

Many UK hiring managers are still catching up with the April 2026 rule changes. They might see the £41,700 headline figure and assume they can't afford to hire international talent.

When you're interviewing, you should be proactive. Explain that as a New Entrant, your sponsorship threshold is actually £33,400. This removes the cost barrier and shows you have a firm grip on UK compliance. It moves the conversation from your visa status to your skills.

A checklist for the 2026 transition

  • Check your SOC code: Even with the New Entrant discount, you must still meet 70% of the "going rate" for your specific job. Some tech and engineering roles have high going rates that might still exceed £33,400.

  • Watch the clock: Calculate how much of your four-year limit you've already used. If you're currently on a Graduate Visa, your window is closing.

  • Negotiate with the jump in mind: Ensure your employment contract includes a clear path for salary reviews, so you aren't caught off guard when your New Entrant status expires.

Are you a student or graduate worried about the 2026 salary jumps?

Don't let the headlines discourage you. Most Indian graduates still have a clear path to sponsorship if they use the rules correctly.
